A mocha latte is just a coffee latte with chocolate added to it (also known as a mochaccino). Coffee and chocolate combine almost perfectly in flavour. Either cocoa powder or chocolate syrup can be added to achieve the desired chocolate flavour.
Only a few shots of espresso and steamed or frothed milk are needed to make a latte. On the other side, an espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate caffe mocha. A mocha is coffee + milk + chocolate, whereas a latte is just coffee + milk.
What is a mocha?
The only difference between creating a simple mocha and a typical handmade latte is the addition of chocolate. Espresso, frothed milk, and chocolate are the three ingredients we’ll need (more on this in a second).
Naturally, whipped cream if you really want to step it up, which I highly advise.
- Fill the mug with espresso.
- Shake heated milk and chocolate until foamy.
- Cover the espresso with milk.
- If preferred, garnish with foam, whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, and chocolate chips.
Options to make Espresso at home
Traditionally, espresso is created with an espresso machine, which passes pressurised water through very finely ground coffee that is tightly packed to produce creamy espresso.
Can espresso be made at home without a machine, though? For your handmade lattes, there are a few methods you may still use to make espresso or coffee that tastes like espresso.
Strongly brewed coffee is simple and very available. When brewing coffee, you will use less water in the coffee-to-water ratio. For a strong brew, it is generally advised to use a 15:1 ratio of water to coffee. In the end, it comes down to personal preference.
The chocolate is the star of a handmade mocha. Without it, a mocha is not possible. Depending on what you have on hand and want, I have three incredibly simple options for adding chocolate to your mocha (plus one more simple hack).
- Chocolate Syrup: Much like a caramel latte, when I need to make ice cream, I just use the chocolate syrup I have on hand. It perfectly blends into the milk to make the ideal mocha. When I worked at Caribou in the Midwest, they started utilising small chocolate chips in their mochas (and white mochas, too), and I loved the change.
- Choices for chocolate. It was particularly chocolaty, rich, and decadent. I enjoy doing the same now that I make my own mochas at home. They melt and impart a beautiful, sweet chocolate flavour to the warm milk.
- Chopped Chocolate Bar: Use an unsweetened or bittersweet chopped baking chocolate bar in place of the small chocolate chips if you prefer less sweet lattes.
- Chocolate Milk: Alright, so this is the super simple trick. If you have chocolate milk at home, prepare your mocha by just heating it.
Maintain frosted milk
First things first, for the best froth, I suggest using whole milk. Use oat milk for the greatest dairy-free alternative.
My preferred method of heating milk in a mason jar for frothing at home is milk. Without the lid, warm up the milk jar in the microwave until it is warm.
When it’s prepared, add the chocolate, cover the jar with the lid, and aggressively shake it (while dancing, because happiness creates great lattes) until it has doubled in size and foamed.
As the chips are agitated with the hot milk, they will melt.
The best mochas
Technically speaking, there isn’t whipped cream on a standard latte if we’re talking about specifics. Whipped cream feels mandatory in mochas, thus I’m pretty sure they belong in a different category. In this instance, it’s a really wonderful topping.
I suggest whipping up some handmade whipped cream and sprinkling a generous dollop on top. Of course, after that, pour generously with chocolate sauce or small chocolate chips.
Instructions
- As desired, brew espresso or strong coffee.
- Fill a mason jar with milk and, if using chocolate syrup, fill it with that as well. 1 1/2 minutes in the microwave. You might need to heat the food for an additional minute or more in 30-second bursts, depending on your microwave. The milk should be warm but not boiling.
- Use a potholder or towel to help you take the milk jar carefully from the microwave because it will be hot.
- Add the mini chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, if using, and shake briskly for 30 to 1 minute with the lid on the mason jar. More foaming techniques are listed in the notes below.
- Carefully remove the lid while holding it in place with a towel or potholder, being mindful of any pressure that may have built up inside the jar.
- Drizzle some chocolate syrup in the mug you’ll be drinking from, if you want. Pour the milk over the espresso and top with any remaining foam in the jar. Serve right away with whipped cream and more drizzled chocolate, if preferred.
Conclusion
A latte is a coffee drink made with 2/3 steamed milk and 1/3 espresso, topped with a thin coating of froth. A mocha latte is a coffee drink that contains chocolate syrup. It has a nice chocolate flavour and is somewhat sweeter than a typical latte.
Whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate are frequently added to mochas to make them even more decadent and mouthwatering. Since they are the same thing, mocha latte is frequently abbreviated to just “mocha.”
